And so, our Journey into the pounding heart of darkness that is Undiscovered Donegal begins in the lonely, remote and beautiful village of Glencolmcille in South West Donegal.
Sitting approximately 2 KM North of the village, just beyond the outrageously innacessable Glen Head sits a further headland called Mullaghtan. At the foot of this 200m high headland lives the "Dare to Be" Sea stack.
This chubby Matterhorn shaped sea stack sits equidistant between Skelpoonagh bay (to the South) and the mighty Sturral Headland to the North. It is very efficiently guarded by a wall of 200m high vertical terror for a kilometer on either side of it. To access the base of this outstanding sea stack we paddled from Skelpoonagh Bay for a KM along the base of the monster sea cliffs above. An uber calm sea and a serene sense of inner calm were required for this sea passage, as escape is impossible.
This sea stack can be easily seen from the R263 Glencolmcille to Malin Beg road.
